Introduction

Apologies for the delay in this weeks article, had hoped to have my computer back on Wednesday, but it does require a lot of work, so still without my main computer complete with completed articles, I was debating what to write about, when I realised that I needed to complete my 2021 census form.

It then dawned on me that I made a mistake regarding the publication of the 1921 census, it will of course not be released until next year after its One Hundreth Anniversary, not this year, as I have stated several times. Just because it is 100 years ago this year, I had a senior moment, so apologies for that.

Once released it will be available to view at a number of places, also on the internet, as others are now. It has been mentioned before, but the 1921 census is very important to family Historians, it will be the last released until 2051, with the 1931 being destroyed during the war and the 1941 census not being taken. When compared alongside the 1939 Register (see Article -6) it will help to fill a gap in peoples research.

The 2021 Census

Having just completed mine online, a number of interesting facts or points come to mind. The first one is me being petty, it says that it will only take around ten minutes a person to fill in, it took me nearly thirty, did do my wife’s as well.

There are a lot of questions which are not only new, but could make a number of talking points in a hundred years time.

  • Same gender marriages
  • Sex Changes
  • Service in the Armed Forces – This question the result of lobbying to Government by the Royal British Legion (Now do you believe that we do not just spend our time drinking beer – lol)
  • In depth questions on education.
  • Employment questions even when you have been retired for years.

One question that is missing from the 1911 is regarding the number of children born to the couple, I found this to be an absolute treasure find, enabling me to work out complete families a lot easier. Cannot remember if this was asked ten years ago, or in any other census that I filled out. We will have to wait and see if it was asked in 1921.

Having thought about the questions asked this time, it will certainly be a great help to family historians and others in the future, giving an in depth insight into education, gender and race.

Conclusion

Apologies for this brief article, did want to let you know that you had not been forgotten also felt that I needed to update you regarding the 1921 census.

Appreciate that the 2021 census only applies to the UK, but thought that all our friends from around r the world would find it to be of interest as well.

With a bit of luck hope to have my main computer back and working shortly, so will be able to go back to the system of articles that I had planned before the crash.

Hope that you did enjoy these few notes, as always if you have any comments please do let us know as always we do appreciate the tame that you take to make them.

The net article will be 8 – Parish Registers
